Circumstances of loss

BUILT 1944 BY CALIFORNIA SHIP BUILDING CORPORATION, LOS ANGELES. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY CIA. INTERNATIONAL LACONIA, S.A. ON PASSAGE TAMPA, FLORIDA FOR KANDLA, INDIA, RAN AGROUND ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF BURAL REEF NE OF PORT OKHA, INDIA. THERE WAS INITIAL CONFUSION WITH REGARD TO ITS PRECISE LOCATION, ORIGINALLY BEING REPORTED NW OF OKHA BUT, EVENTUALLY FOUND TO THE NE. THE CREW WERE ALL SAFELY RESCUED AFTER THE VESSEL'S HOLDS AND ENGINE-ROOM HAD FLOODED. THE WRECKED VESSEL WAS SUBSEQUENTLY LOOTED BY LOCAL COUNTRY CRAFT AND, ON NOVEMBER 1ST, WAS REPORTED TO BE ABLAZE. (MSD).
