Circumstances of loss

A RIVETED IRON-HULLED THREE MASTED SAILING VESSEL, BUILT IN APRIL 1864 BY T VERNON & SON, LIVERPOOL. SHE WAS MOORED AT THE COALING PIER ON THE NORTH SIDE OF OCEAN HARBOUR WHEN A SEVERE GALE CAUSED HER TO BREAK LOOSE & RUN AGROUND ACROSS THE HARBOUR, WHERE SHE WAS HOLED. ATTEMPTS BY TWO WHALE CATCHERS TO TOW HER OFF WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. (THE ISLAND OF SOUTH GEORGIA BY ROBERT HEADLAND).
