Circumstances of loss
7.1.1895 BUILT OF WOOD IN 1876 AT SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY RICHARDSON BELL AND OTHERS, LIVERPOOL. RECENTLY OVERHAULED AND IN CLASS WITH BUREAU VERITAS. SAILED CARDIFF 7.1.1895 FOR SANTOS. CARGO 1732 TONS OF COAL WITH SOME IRON. ENCOUNDERED A GALE ON 11.1.1895 AND SHORTENED SAIL. IN 15.1 SHE WAS DISMASTED, THE MAINMAST BROKE OFF PARTLY ABOVE AND PARTLY BELOW THE UPPER DECK TEARING A LARGE HOLE IN THE DECK, THROUGH WHICH THE SEA KEPT POURING IN. THE PUMPS WERE DISABLED BY THE DISMASTING SO THE MASTER DECIDED TO ABANDON. CREW RECOVERED BY SS WILCANNIA AND WERE LANDED AT LAST PALMAS. SHE WAS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN SEEN THREE OR FOUR DAYS LATER BUT HAS NOT BEEN HEARD OF SINCE. (INVESTIGATION OF LOSS).
