Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1851 BY W.H.BROWN & CO. WITH A BEAM ENGINE & PADDLES OF 35FT DIAM. PASSAGE SAN FRANCISCO FOR NEW YORK CARRYING 1,400,000 OF GOLD. SHE CAUGHT FIRE AMIDSHIPS 3.5M OFF MANZANILLO, MEXICO. THE CAPTAIN HEADED FOR THE BEACH, WHERE SOME PASSENGERS SWAM ASHORE OR SAVED BY BOATS. ABOUT 80 PEOPLE INCLUDING THE CAPTAIN WERE RESCUED EVENTUALLY FROM A TOTAL OF 337. SOME OF THE GOLD WAS RECOVERED AT A LATER DATE. (DODS)
