Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, BUILT 1882 BY AITKIN & MANSEL, WAS WAITING OFFSHORE FOR SNOW STORMS AND GALES TO EASE SO THAT IT COULD PROCEED TO ST MALO. THE VESSEL MUST HAVE HEADED SHOREWARDS BECAUSE SHE STRUCK ON REEF, LES COURTIS, AND BROKE IN TWO AS THE LIFE RAFTS WERE LOWERED. ONLY 6 OF THE 131 PASSENGERS SURVIVED AND CREW BY CLIMBING THE MASTS THAT REMAINED ABOVE THE ICY WATER. AT LOW TIDE THE VESSEL WAS EXAMINED, PHOTOGRAPHS REVEALED THAT THE ENTIRE BOTTOM HAD BEEN TORN AWAY FORWARD OF THE ENGINE ROOM. VESSEL WAS ON PASSAGE FROM SOUTHAMPTON TO ST MALO. OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY LONDON & WESTERN RAILWAY CO. (DODS).
