BUILT IN 1901 BY FAIRFIELD SHIPBUILDING CO., WITH BELLEVILLE BOILERS, WITH TRIPLE-EXPANSION ENGINES OF 22,000IHP. A UNIT OF CHINA SQUADRON, WAS CARRYING OUT FULL SPEED TRIALS IN THE STRAITS OF KOREA. SHE STRANDED ON THE SAMARANG ROCKS OFF QUELPART ISLAND, DURING ROUGH WEATHER. 18 OF 537 CREW WERE DROWNED AS WATER FLOODED STOKEHOLD. ARMED WITH 14 6IN GUNS, 9 12PDR, 3PDR AND 2T.T. (DODS)
