(INDONESIAN NM 25/219/08). CINC DELETED. INS NDW. BR STD. 6.3.17 WRECK SITE EXAM'D 5.11.16: M/B SURVEY OF WRECK SITE REVEALED THE WK HAD BEEN SCAVENGED BUT BOTTOM TOPOGRAPHY SUGGESTS SOME WRECKAGE REMAINS. DIVING OPERATIONS LOCATED SEVERAL SMALL SECTIONS OF THE WRECK SCATTERED OVER THE BOTTOM. A SINGLE 4.7INCH MK GUN MOUNT WAS LOCATED, WITH GUN BARREL IMBEDDED IN SEA FLOOR. 4.7 INCH SHELL CASINGS WERE SCATTERED NEARBY ON TOP OF THE STRUCTURE. (WK REPORT BY LT CDR (RANR) ANDREW FOCK, 2016). Circumstances of loss

28.2.42 BUILT IN 1934 BY HAWTHORN, LESLIE. 3-DRUM BOILERS, TURBINE ENGINES OF 26000 SHP FOR 36 KNOTS. FOUR 4.7 INCH, SIX SMALLER GUNS, 8 TORPEDO TUBES. THE ONLY VESSEL TO ESCAPE THE FIRST PHASE OF THE BATTLE OF THE JAVA SEA (SEE HMS EXETER). REACHED SOURABAYA SAFELY AND JOINED HMS EXETER AND USN DESTROYER POPE. SAILED DURING THE NIGHT OF 28.2.42 WITH THE OTHERS FOR AUSTRALIA. NEXT MORNING SIGNALLED SHE HAD BEEN INTERCEPTED BY THREE JAPANESE CRUISERS. SUNK BY HER COMPANY JUST BEFORE NOON, HAVING EXPENDED ALL AMMUNTION AND WITH ENGINES DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. (DODS).
