Circumstances of loss

PROTECTED CRUISER HMS HAWKE, BUILT 1893, SANK WITHIN A FEW MINUTES AFTER BEING TORPEDOED BY U9 IN N SEA, WHILST ON DUTY AS PART OF NORTHERN PATROL. VESSEL WAS HIT ABREAST THE FOREMOST FUNNEL, NO DISTRESS SIGNALS WERE SENT, NEARLY 500 LIVES WERE LOST, 70 SURVIVED.
