Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1938 BY JOHN BROWN & CO. THREE DRUM BOILERS, TURBINE ENGINES OF 40,000 SHP FOR 36KTS. WAS PART OF A DESTROYER DIVISION PATROLLING BETWEEN CRETE AND LIBYA WHEN ATTACKED BY GERMAN DIVE BOMBERS. IN THE ENSUING ACTION HMS JACKAL WAS HIT AND DISABLED, LATER BEING TOWED BY HMS JERVIS. SHE STAYED AFLOAT UNTIL THE EARLY HOURS OF THE NEXT DAY BEFORE BEING SUNK BY HMS JERVIS. 9 MEN LOST. (DODS).
