Circumstances of loss

22.10.026 BUILT IN 1916 BY C RENNOLDSTON & SONS. TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINES OF 2000IHP FOR 16.5 KNOTS. PASSAGE NASSAU FOR BERMUDA. TOOK PASSAGE WITH JUST SUFFICIENT COAL DUE TO A SHORTAGE. AT 0800 22.10.026 WAS 5 MILES FROM GIBBS HILL, BERMUDA WITH NO INDICATION OF STORMY WEATHER. JUST AFTER THIS A SERIES OF SQUALLS WITH WIND SPEED UP TO 136 MPH SWEPT THE AREA. THE ENIGNES STOPPED, THE SHIP WAS LAID OVER UNTIL THE FUNNELS SUBMERGED AT WHICH POINT WATER FLOODED IN, THE BOILERS BURST AND THE SHIP SANK. 86 MEN LOST. (DODS).
