3.8.74 RAN AGROUND ON RENOQUET ISLAND BURHOU ISLANDS, ALDERNEY. WAS TAKING PART IN THE CHANNEL SQUADRON'S SUMMER MANOEUVRES OF 1901 WHEN HER CO, LT WILLIAM SPEKE RN, ON SATURDAY 3RD AUGUST, AT 1735, WRECKED THE WORLD'S FIRST TURBINE DRIVEN WARSHIP ON RENONQUET REEF OFF ALDERNEY. LAUNCHED ON 6 SEPTEMBER 1899 AND WAS ALMOST TWO YEARS OLD WHEN LOST. 'VIPER' WAS FIRMLY ON RENONQUET REEF AT A POSITION BETWEEN BLACK ROCK AND WEST SOUTHWEST RENONQUET. IMPOSSIBLE TO RECOVER ANYTHING FROM HER FOUR TURBINES. ON 17 AUGUST 1901 FLEET TUG 'SEAHORSE' WITH A PARTY FROM HMS VERNON ARRIVED AT ALDERNEY TO BLOW UP THE WRECK. HER REMAINS WERE SOLD TO AGNES & CO, SOUTHAMPTON, FOR �100, WHO TOOK WHAT THEY COULD, LEAVING MUCH WRECKAGE WHERE IT REMAINS TO THIS DAY. DISCOVERIES MADE BY DIVERS IN THE SUMMER OF 1973 INCLUDED SEVERAL BRASS SCUTTLE FRAMES AND BRASS OIL LAMPS. (THE MARINER'S MIRROR, 3.8.74).
