Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, BUILT 1944 BY A/S NAKSKOV SKIBSV., NAKSKOV. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY SARDIS BROS. ON PASSAGE FROM TEKIRDAG, TURKEY TO DENMARK. NO 1 HOLD CAUGHT FIRE AT PERAMA ON SEPT 30, 1966. THE PORT FIRE BRIGADE WERE UNABLE TO PUT IT OUT, AND THE VESSEL WAS MOVED TO KYNOSSOURA TO DISCHARGE HER CARGO. THE FIRE WAS THEN CONSIDERED TO BE OUT. SHE SAILED ON OCT 5, HOWEVER THREE DAYS LATER THE CARGO IN NO 2 HOLD BEGAN OVERHEATING AS A RESULT OF THE CARBON DIOXIDE FLOODING NO 1 HOLD SPREADING INTO NO 2 HOLD. ON OCT 11, OFF THE ALGERIAN COAST, FIRE BROKE OUT IN BOTH HOLDS. THE MASTER BEACHED HIS VESSEL 2M FROM RAS EL MOGHREB, AND ALL THE CREW SAFELY ABANDONED THE BLAZING VESSEL. SHE WAS COMPLETELY GUTTED AFTER THE BUNKERS CAUGHT FIRE, AND SUBSEQUENTLY BROKE HER BACK. (MSD).
