VESSEL, BUILT IN 1888 BY HARLAND & WOLFF AND OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY PENINSULAR & ORIENTAL STEAM NAVIGATION CO., SANK FOLLOWING A COLLISION WITH GERMAN 4-MASTED BARQUE 'PISAGUA' [2850 TONS] WHILE ON PASSAGE TILBURY TO BOMBAY. WAS BEING TOWED TOWARDS DOVER BY NEWHAVEN TUG 'ALERT' WHEN SHE SANK, HAVING PREVIOUSLY BEEN ABANDONED. THE 'OCEANA' WAS CARRYING A CARGO OF �747,110 IN GOLD AND SILVER DESTINED FOR PORT SAID AND BOMBAY ALL OF WHICH WAS RECOVERED. (DODS).
