Circumstances of loss

Wreck forms an elongated oval, with straight sides which then curve inwards to form the ends. A large wooden beam runs down the long axis of the oval, joining the two ends together. The remains are 10.6m long (measured from one end of the central beam to the other) and 2.6m wide. Both ends (as far as can be ascertained from the visible remains) appear identical, and therefore it is not possible to identify which is the bow and which is the stern. The beam itself appears to consist of a single roughly hewn timber, c. 20cm wide, which is shaped at both ends to form a blunt point. This point appears to be fitted into a gap between the curving end members which form the ends of the hull. These end members also appear to be constructed of single pieces of rough timber approximately 20-23cm wide. These are then connected to the long narrow side members (again constructed of single rough timbers 20cm wide) by diagonal scarf joints. The entire area contained within the side members of covered by planks, approximately 20cm wide and 3.5cm thick and situated c.10cm below the top surface of the side members. Evidence of fixing is poor, there is a hole with a possible treenail over one of the scarf joints, while possible infilled holes were visible along the end members. It was possible that some of these contained iron residue.
