Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1971 BY ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA HEAVY INDUSTRIES, AIOI. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY SOUTHWIND SHIPPING CO SA. HAD LOADED COAL AT HAMPTON ROADS AND THEN IRON ORE AT VITORIA, BRAZIL, ALL FOR DISCHARGE AT TOBATA, JAPAN. WRECKED WHEN RAN AGROUND ON SEBIKI SHOAL. DUE TO PROXMITY OF TYPHOON 'JUDY' CREW WERE EVACUATED. AFTER TYPHOON HAD PASSED ON 23 AUGUST A HELCOPTER LOCATED ONLY A LARGE OIL SLICK. WRECK SUBSEQUENTLY LOCATED BY E/S 27 AUGUST SOME 6.5 MILES FROM SEKIBI SHOAL. (MSD).
