Circumstances of loss
BUILT 1940 IN WILHELMSHAVEN WITH TURBINE ENGINES AND WATER TUBE BOILERS, CAPABLE OF 30 KNOTS. VARIOUS EARLIER ATTACKS BY BRITISH MINI SUBMARINES AND RUSSIAN AIRCRAFT HAD FAILED TO SINK VESSEL. FINALLY SUNK BY RAID OF 32 RAF LANCASTER BOMBERS. VESSEL CAPSIZED WITH LOSS OF APPROXIMATELY 1000 OF HER CREW. 85 SURVIVORS ESCAPED NEXT DAY THROUGH A HOLE CUT IN PART OF HULL ABOVE WATER. (DODS)
