LEAST E/S DEPTH 80 IN GEN DEPTH 86MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 5MTRS, LENGTH 70 TO 80MTRS. LYING 175/355DEG. NOT WELL DEFINED. TWO OTHER CONTACTS POSSIBLY WKGE, BUT CONSIDERED PROBABLY NATURAL FEATURES LIE APPROX 450MTRS TO THE WEST. (BUE SUBSEA, HI 262B). BR STD. 12.9.97 REPORTED THAT VESSEL WAS CARRYING 3000TONS NICKEL INGOTS, SOME OF WHICH AND THE BELL HAVE BEEN RECOVERED. CONCERN EXPRESSED THAT VESSEL IS A WAR GRAVE & AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERFERRED WITH. (A PRITCHARD, CG BELFAST).

VESSEL TAKEN OVER AS A WAR TRANSPORT WAS CARRYING 2030 AMERICAN TROOPS FROM HALIFAX TO LIVERPOOL. 166 LIVES WERE LOST. WAS PART OF CONVOY HX20, WHEN APPROX 7M N OF RATLIN THREE TORPEDOES WERE FIRED AT HER FROM 4000YDS, THE THIRD HITTING AMIDSHIPS, SHE SANK FOUR HOURS LATER.
