Circumstances of loss
MINED OFF 'UTAH' BEACH DURING OPERATION 'NEPTUNE'. (AUTHORITY NOT STATED). 6.6.1944 US NAVY DESTROYER, BUILT IN 1941 BY THE CHARLESTON NAVY YARD, WAS MINED AND SUNK OFF THE COAST OF NORMANDY WHILST ENGAGED IN THE OPERATIONS CONSEQUENT UPON THE LANDING OF THE ALLIED ARMY IN FRANCE ON 'D DAY', 6.6.1944. TWO OTHER US DESTROYERS, THE 'GLENNON' AND THE 'MEREDITH', WERE ALSO MINED IN THE SAME AREA ON THE SAME DAY. (DODS).
