Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1856 BY W.DENNY & BROS. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY UNION LINE WHO PURCHASED SHIP FROM LIVERPOOL FIRM SCHILLIZZI. REGULAR PASSAGE BETWEEN SOUTHAMPTON FOR THE CAPE. VESSEL WAS LYING IN THE ROADSTEAD AT TABLE BAY. THE TERRIBLE WEATHER WORSENED DURING THE DAY AND IN THE EVENING SHE WAS OBSERVED TO HAVE PARTED HER CABLES AND ENDEAVOURING TO MAKE OPEN SEA AFTER ROUNDING MOUILLE POINT, MOUNTAINOUS WAVES EXTINGUISHED HER BOILER FIRES AND SHE WAS DRIVEN ON TO ROCKS BETWEEN MOUILLE POINT AND GREEN POINT. ALL 29 CREW LOST. (DODS)
