Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1915 BY NORTHUMBERLAND SHIPBUILDING CO. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ST MARY STEAMSHIP CO. TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 535NHP FOR 11 KNOTS. PASSAGE NORFOLK, VIRGINIA FOR PERNAMUCO WITH 7500 TONS CARGO AND 1761 TONS OF BUNKER COAL, BEING OVERLOADED BY 141 TONS. WAS BADLY DAMAGED BY A HURRICANE ON 22.10 AND THE HATCH COVERS WERE RIPPED OFF. DEVELOPED A SLIGHT LIST WHICH INCREASED AS THE DAY WORE ON. AT 1728 A DISTRESS CALL WAS SENT AND ANSWERED BY SS LUCILINE, SOME 30 MILES AWAY. AT 1900 EASTWAY TURNED ON BEAM ENDS AND SANK. 22 MEN LOST. 12 MEN REACHED ONE BOAT AND WERE RECOVERED BY LUCILINE THE FOLLOWING DAY. (DODS).
