Circumstances of loss

19.7.70 BUILT IN 1949. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY DEN NORSKE AMERIKALINJE A/S. WHILST ON A 10-DAY MEDITERRANEAN AND ATLANTIC CRUISE OUT OF GENOA HAD A FIRE IN THE ENGINE-ROOM WHEN 140M N OF LAS PALMAS DURING THE EARLY HOURS OF 19.7.70. ALL 448 PASSENGERS WERE ABLE TO ABANDON SHIP SAFELY ALONG WITH MOST OF THE CREW. THE REMAINDER, INCLUDING THE MASTER, WERE EVENTUALLY FORCED OFF BY THE FLAMES AND HEAVY LIST. WAS TAKEN IN TOW BUT SANK IN 2000FMS. (MSD).
