VESSEL, BUILT 1965 BY CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE, ST NAZAIRE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ANTARIO SHIPPING CO. ON PASSAGE FROM CEYHAN TERMINAL, NEAR MERSIN, S TURKEY FOR TIRESTE. SANK BY THE HEAD FOLLOWING AN EXPLOSION WHILE ANCHORING TO REFUEL IN NAVARINO BAY. FIRE SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE VESSEL WHICH SANK 12 HOURS LATER. 35,000 TONS OIL LOST TO THE SEA CAUSING POLLUTION & FIRE DAMAGE TO THE BUNKERING TERMINAL ASHORE. 40,000 TONS BURNT DURING THE FIRE & 25,000 TONS EVAPORATED. HER HULL HAD BEEN TORN & HER DECKS HEAVILY BUCKLED & HER FORECASTLE ACCOMMODATION WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED. 29 CREW SAVED, TWO DIED. (MSD).
