H1246/69 13.5.69 WRECKAGE LIES DIRECTLY OUT FROM CAVE AT RAMILLIES COVE, SOME 40FT MORE WRECKAGE LIES 150FT E OF POSN. WK BROKEN UP, STERN STILL RECOGNISABLE, BOILERS INTACT. STERN STRADDLES WK OF HMS RAMILLIES [18093] IN 501420N, 035203W. BOW LIES 300FT AWAY HARD AGAINST CLIFF IN 8FT OF WATER. PIECES OF POTTERY SCATTERED ABOUT DUE TO CURRENT. RAN AGROUND DURING FOG WHILE ON PASSAGE W AFRICA TO PLYMOUTH & LIVERPOOL. VESSEL, BUILT 1896 AS 'ALBERTVILLE', OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ELDER DEMPSTER LINE. WAS CARRYING IVORY, RUBBER, PALM OIL, PINEAPPLES, BANANAS AND MAIL. ALL 79 PASSENGERS & 76 CREW RESCUED. VESSEL STARTED TO BREAK UP A MONTH LATER AND WAS COMPLETELY IN PIECES BY THE SUMMER. (DIVE SOUTH DEVON [PHOTO], SHIPWRECK INDEX OF BRITISH ISLES).
