BUILT OR IRON IN 1857 IN NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY LAING & CO. TWO BOILERS, COMPOUND EXPANSION ENGINE, SINGLE SHAFT. PASSAGE NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE FOR LONDON. FOUNDERED IN DREADFUL WEATHER, CAUSE UNKNOWN. 21 CREW AND 32 PASSENGERS LOST. SOME ITEMS WASHED ASHORE. HAD BEEN OBSERVED TO LEAVE THE TYNE DDEPLY LADEN AND VERY MUCH DOWN BY THE STERN, WITH NOT MORE THAN 12 INCHES OF FREEBOARD. PROBABLY POOPED AND FIRES EXTINGUISHED. (SIBI & DODS).
