BUILT IN 1900 BY PALMERS' CO LTD, NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE. OWNED A TIME OF LOSS BY MANCHESTER LINERS. THREE BOILERS, TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 642 NHP, SINGLE SHAFT. PASSAGE NEW ORLEANS FOR MANCHESTER. PART CARGO OF 13000 BALES OF COTTON IGNITED SPONTANEOUSLY. MASTER HEADED FOR DINGLE BAY AND ANCHORED WHILE THE CREW FOUGHT THE FIRE. THE FIRE INTENSIFIED REACHING THE REST OF THE CARGO, WHICH INCLUDED 100 BARRELS TURPENTINE, SOAP, PITCH PINE & MAIZE. CAPTAIN COUCH SCUTTLED HIS SHIP IN SOME 40FT DEPTH, LEAVING THE DECKS AWASH. SALVAGE ATTEMPTS FAILED DUE TO GALES. DECLARED AS CTL BY FEB 1904. (SII).
