5.6.67 INTERVIEW WITH MR TURNER, KINGSTON SUB AQUA CLUB, BSAC REPORTS THAT A STEEL HULLED SAILING VESSEL, LENGTH APPROX 120FT BEAM APPROX 20FT, LIES IN 150FT OF WATER IN 501436N, 035630W. THE BOWS ARE FAIRLY INTACT, THE REMAINDER OF THE WRECKAGE IS SLIGHTLY OPENED UP. PROBABLY BUILT ABOUT 1875. [DATE ON PLATE NEAR WHEELHOUSE]. (MR TURNER, KINGSTON SUB AQUA CLUB, BSAC 5.6.67). CHART AS NDW PA. R/S. 5.6.67 THIS WRECK COULD BE THE OREGON, 801TONS, SUNK 18.12.1890 WITH CARGO OF NITRATE OF SODA OFF BOLT TAIL IN BIGBURY BAY. (NOTE [VIA MR ATHERTON] BY THE NORTH GLOS SUB AQUA CLUB). NCA. H4267/70 21.8.70 THE WRECK, LYING IN SAND IN 501442N, 035614W USING DECCA, IS IRON WITH NO EVIDENCE OF BOILERS OR MACHINERY. VESSEL VERY BROKEN UP BUT MOST OF THE STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK OF THE BOTTOM OF THE VESSEL IS COMPARATIVELY INTACT. THE CENTRE SECTION STANDS NO MORE THAN 3-4FT HIGH GENERALLY WITH AN OCCASIONAL PART UP TO 6-8FT. PART OF THE BOW STANDS SOME 15FT HIGH WITH A LARGE ANCHOR STILL ATTACHED. THE DATE 1875 [DATE OF BUILDING OF OREGON FROM LLOYDS] WAS FOUND CAST INTO BOSS OF REMAINS OF WHEEL. A REPORT FROM 'THE TIMES', 20.12.1890, STATES LOSS AS ON BOOK ROCKS NEAR THURLESTONE. THESE TWO THINGS PLUS THE TYPE OF WRECK SEEMS TO CONFIRM VESSEL AS 'OREGON'. (D T B CALKIN, SURBITON, SURREY, REPORT DTD 18.8.70). CHART AS WK 13FMS [23MTRS] IN REVISED POSN. R/S. 18.12.1890 SUNK OFF BOLT TAIL IN BIGBURY BAY ON 18.12.1890. (N. GLOS SUB-AQUA CLUB VIA MR ATHERTON). STRUCK THE BOOKS IN DARKNESS AND HEAVY RAIN HAVING TAKEN A PILOT AT FALMOUTH. INBOUND FOR NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE FROM IQUIQUE, CHILE. (DIVERS GUIDE TO S DEVON).
