Circumstances of loss

9.5.1917 PT1 AND PT2 WERE BUILT FOR THE WAR IN MESOPOTAMIA BY GEORGE BROWN, GREENOCK IN 1917. ONE OF THE TWO VESSELS WAS LOST DURING THE DELIVERY VOYAGE. OPERATED AT TIME OF LOSS BY THE INLAND TRANSPORT OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS. LEFT GREENOCK AT 1000 ON 9.5.1917. CREW OF CAPTAIN, ONE LT, 3 X 2ND LTS, ONE SERGEANT, TWO CORPORALS AND TEN SAPPERS. WHEN OFF THE CALF OF MAN WATER WAS TAKEN IN RAPIDLY AND THE CREW WERE ORDERED TO TAKE TO THE BOATS. THE STBD BOAT CLEARED WITH EIGHT OF THE CREW BUT THE PORT BOAT BECAME JAMMED UNDER THE PADDLE BOX AND CAPSIZED. THE OCCUPANTS WERE THROWN INTO THE WATER. FIVE RESCUED BUT SIX DROWNED. THE SURVIVORS WERE TAKEN INTO PEEL. (A CORKHILL).
