TYPE VIIC. ARMAMENT OF 1 X 88MM AND 1 X 20MM GUN, 5 TORPEDO TUBES. OIL ENGINES, TWIN SHAFT. DEPTH CHARGED BY HMSNS NATAL, LT CDR D G HALL, USING SQUID. NATAL HAD LEFT THE TYNE ONLY FOUR HOURS EARLIER ON HER FIRST COMMISSION. U714 ONLY SANK TWO VESSELS OF 425 AND 1226 TONS BEFORE BEING SUNK THE SAME DAY. ALL HANDS LOST.
