Circumstances of loss

11.1.99 EX-LACONIA '87, EX-ESSO MALACCA '83. BUILT IN 1969 BY ISHIKAWAJIMA HARIMA HEAVY INDUSTRIES, KURE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY DIANA SHIPPING SERVICES SA. WHILE AT IRAN'S LAVAN ISLAND TERMINAL DISCHARGING A CARGO, WAS ATTACKED 11.1.99 BY IRAQUI AIRCRAFT AND WAS STRUCK BY TWO EXOCET MISSILES. FIRES QUICKLY SPREAD AND THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION. 8 MEN DIED. THE BLAZING VESSEL WAS ABANDONED. THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL BY THE NIGHT OF 12.1.88. WAS REPORTEDLY TOWED OUT AND DELIBERATELY SCUTTLED PRIOR TO 19.7.89. (MSD).
