7.5.77 BUILT IN 1958 BY NATIONAL BULK CARRIERS INC (KURE SHIPYARD DIVISION), KURE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY UNIVERSE TANKSHIPS INC. PASSAGE PHILADELPHIA FOR EITHER CABINDA OR ESCRAVOS RIVER TO LOAD OIL CARGO. SUFFERED FIRE AND EXPOSION AND WAS ABANDONED ON 15.4 77. TOWED BY SALVAGE TUG TO POSN 12 MILES OFF DAKAR ON 24.4 77. SURVEYOR REPORTED HER DOWN BY THE STERN & LISTING SLIGHTLY WITH STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO TANKS 10-14. WAS SUNK 7.5.77 FOLLOWING TERMINATION OF TOWING CONTRACT 2 DAYS BEFORE, MORE THAN 200 MILES OFF LAND. (MSD).
