Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1948 BY BARCLAY, CURLE & CO. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY THE BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION CO. OIL ENGINES FOR 14KTS. WAS UNLOADING AT DUBAI WHEN SEVERE WEATHER FORCED THE SHIP TO SEA. DURING THE RETURN PASSAGE THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION BETWEEN DECKS CAUSED BY A BOMB. THE FIRE WAS EVENTUALLY EXTINGUISHED AFTER 2 DAYS, BUT THE SHIP SANK WHILE BEING TOWED BY SALVAGE V OCEAN SALVOR. OF A TOTAL OF 819 ON BOARD, 238 PASSENGERS AND CREW WERE LOST. (DODS).
