19.7.18 EX-STATENDAM. UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN 1914 BY HARLAND & WOLFF, BELFAST FOR HOLLAND-AMERICKA LINE. WORK STOPPED ON OUTBREAK OF WW1. WAS REQUESTIONED BY THE ADMIRALTY AND COMPLETED IN 1917 AS A TROOPSHIP. TWELVE BOILERS, TWO 4 CYLINDER TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINES & EXHAUST TURBINE, TRIPLE SHAFT. PASSAGE LIVERPOOL FOR NEW YORK IN CONVOY. WAS ATTACKED BY U54, U64 & U124 OFF NW COAST OF IRELAND ON 19.7.18. THE ENGINE ROOM WAS HIT & VESSEL TAKEN IN TOW, BUT WAS ATTACKED AGAIN FOLLOWING DAY, HIT IN PORT SIDE & SANK STERN FIRST. SURVIVORS WERE TAKEN OFF BY ESCORT HMS MARNE WHICH SUCCEEDED IN SINKING U124.
