Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1921 BY CALEDON SHIPBUILDING CO. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY OCEAN SS CO. TURBINE ENGINE OF 6000HP FOR 14.5KTS. PASSAGE LIVERPOOL FOR SINGAPORE AND SHANGHAI. WAS INTERCEPTED BY ITALIAN SUBMARINE 'CAPPELLINI' AND ATTACKED BY GUNFIRE WHEN ABOUT 500M SW OF CAPE PALMAS. AFTER AN EXCHANGE OF GUNFIRE WHICH LASTED OVER AN HOUR, THE BRITISH VESSEL WAS SUNK BY A SINGLE TORPEDO AFTER BEING ABANDONED. 32 MEN LOST. (SHIPS OF THE BLUE FUNNEL LINE, WWIISL, LLOYDS CASUALTIES WWII, DODS, AXIS SUBMARINE SUCCESSES 1939-45).
