QUOTED POSN IS THE HIGHEST POINT, BEING THE BRIDGE AREA, WHICH HAS BEEN SERIOUSLY TORN AWAY BY TRAWLER NETS AND NORMAL WEAKENING OF THE STRUCTURE DUE TO CORROSION. MIN DEPTH NOTED AT ANY TIME WAS 48MTRS WITH THE SEABED MIN AT 68MTRS. WK IS PERFECTLY UPRIGHT, UP TO THE WATERLINE IN SAND, HEADING 010 DEGS. BOW IS TILTED 45 DEGS TO STBD FWD OF 'A' TURRET. THE STERN HAS SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE AND HAS SOME HULL BLOWN AWAY BETWEEN THE AFT GUNS AND THE POOP. BELIEVED THAT TWO OF THE BARRELS FROM ONE FWD GUN HAD BEEN REMOVED PRIOR TO SINKING DUE TO DAMAGE IN A PREVIOUS BATTLE. (V SKOGLIE, VIA LT CDR C JAMES, IN EMAIL DTD 18.3.06). 15.5.45 BUILT IN 1928 BY MITSUBISHI. KANPON BOILERS, TURBINE ENGINES OF 100,000 SHP FOR 33 KNOTS. TEN 8 INCH, EIGHT 4.7 INCH & EIGHT 47MM GUNS. TWO MACHINE GUNS, 8 TORPEDO TUBES, 4 AIRCRAFT. WAS ATTACKED BY AIRCRAFT FROM ESCORT CARRIER HMS SHAH (11420 TONS) OFF PENANG ON THE NIGHT OF 15.5.45. SOME DAMAGE WAS CAUSED. ON THE FOLLOWING NIGHT WAS LOCATED BY A DESTROYER FLOTILLA CONSISTING OF SAUMAREZ, VENUX, VERUALM, VIGILANT AND VIRAGO. A BRISK ACTION TOOK PLACE, HAGURO WAS TORPEDOED AND SUNK. (DODS).
