Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1917 BY HARLAND & WOLFF, BELFAST AS A COURAGOUS-CLASS BATTLECRUISER. 18 YARROW BOILERS, QUADRUPLE STEAM TURBINES OF 90,000 SHE, FOUR SHAFTS FOR 32 KNOTS. REBUILT BETWEEN 1924-1930 TO AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER. DURING TRIALS SHE ACHIEVED 29.5 KNOTS. WAS CAUGHT UNAWARE AND VIRTUALLY DEFENCELESS AND WAS OVERWHELMED BY THE GERMAN BATTLECRUISERS SCHARNHORST AND GNEISENAU, THOUGH VALIANTLY DEFENDED BY HER DESTROYERS ARDENT AND ACASTA SHE CAPSIZED AND SANK AFTER BEING HIT REPEATEDLY BY PLUNGING SHELLS. HMS ACASTA BRAVELY CONTINUED THE ACTION AFTER THE ARDENT WAS SUNK AND MANAGED TO TORPEDO THE SCHARNHORST ABREAST HER REAR TURRET CAUSING SERIOUS DAMAGE BEFORE SHE TOO WAS SUNK. ONLY 1 OF HER CREW, 2 FROM THE ARDENT AND 43 FROM THE GLORIOUS WERE SAVED BY A NORWEGIAN VESSEL OUT OF A TOTAL COMPLEMENT OF APPROX 1500 ON THE 3 SHIPS.
