BUILT IN 1931 BY NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY AMERICAN PRESIDENT LINES. TURBO ELECTRIC PROPULSION. PASSAGE SAN FRANCISCO FOR NEW CALEDONIA AND THE NEW HEBRIDES. EMBARKED WERE THE 172ND INFANTRY COMBAT TEAM 43 DIVISION AND A HARBOUR DEFENCE UNIT. STRUCK A MINE APPROACHING SANTO AND WAS GROUNDED. 5340 MEN GOT SAFELY ASHORE, 2 LIVES LOST.
