Circumstances of loss
BUILT IN 1865 OF TEAK ON AN IRON FRAME IN PEMBROKE DOCKYARD. DESIGNED BY EDWARD J REED, CHIEF CONSTRUCTOR. OWNED BY THE ADMIRALTY. FOUR BOILERS OF 30-32 PSI, HORIZONTAL SINGLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 300 NHP FOR 12.3 KNOTS, SINGLE SHAFT. ARMED WITH TWO 6 INCH GUNS, SLIDE MOUNTED, AND TWO 64 POUNDERS. PASSAGE SPITHEAD FOR HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA. AN INCORRECT HELM ORDER CAUSED COLLISION WITH S COLLIER OSPREY. THE COLLIER WAS CUT IN TWO AND SANK IMMEDIATELY. AMAZON RECOVERED SURVIVORS AND WAS THEN FOUND TO BE LEAKING. SANK SOME 2.5 HOURS LATER.
